For Ro
In a recent post over at Ro's, we were discussing Thanksgiving dinner and how she hosts her families dinner at her house. In years past, we have always had dinner at my grandmother's house; but this year, we will have our very first family Thanksgiving at our house. I cringe every time I think about somebody eating or drinking on our light colored carpet in our dining room. We've used that room only four times in six years; one of which was to eat. I've always been somewhat anal about that room, and for whatever reason, we've never used it. We're not fancy people, and to me, that room had always been set aside for fancy purpose. Nonsense. I've since done away with the golden framed artwork and maroon silk flower arrangements, as well as ridding it from the big poofy window treatments and big bushy swags. It wasn't me. It was too fancy.

Now, the room has received a fresh coat of green paint which I LOVE, some new less fancy window treatments, less fancy artwork, and a more casual feel. Now, I am completely excited to use that room; for Thanksgiving and for always. Who says you can't have a Manwich for dinner in your dining room on a random Tuesday evening? For us, it's never going to be London Broil and red wine; more often a meat loaf and Pepsi. And that's okay.

Now, the carpet. As Ro asked, who in their right mind puts such light colored carpet in their dining room in the first place? I have a good answer for that. For starters, when we built this house, we had never before had a formal dining room. Secondly, when we built this house, we didn't really know how deep we could go financially without being house poor for the rest of our lives. We took the easiest and most cost effective way out of the room that we never knew what to do with, and installed the same carpet that we had installed in our master bedroom. It was cheaper to keep it the same, and I figured that the neutral tone would be easiest when it came to furnishing and decorating.

We have invested in the mother of all upright carpet steamers, and I have since loosened up a bit and decided that we built this house, and that room, to live in. No more yellow caution tape across the doors, we're now open for business!

Happy Thanksgiving to you all!
